Reading your document i understand. It is stating how to do brick level restor from a database backup only (storage group containing bank in exchange word).

That’s not what we do to do brick level.

We backup storage groups, and with another policie (my 2nd response) we backup mailbox. This is a double backup, but you can do incremental brick level backup. Without extra needs of NFS; restoring via admin GUI. (no needs to use client GUI)

According to the following document on Symantec, “Microsoft Services for NFS” is needed for exchange 2003 granular backup/restore : http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/316982.htm

Probably your have been restoring granularly through “Recovery Storage Group” ? This way allows your to restore directly from “Backup Archive and Restore” interface. If you are able to restore directly from NetBackup interfaces, can you share this process with us?

Also, according to the above document incremental backup is not supported when you try to backup individual mailboxes.

5.5.3 needs to be corrected as 6.5.3

In addition you can split brick level backup of the mailboxes (less time consuming) doing that:

some statement are wrong in your aticle:
- It is not needed to install NFS.
- We use one policy for the store and another one for the “brick level” (aka granular) backup. No need of puting them all in the same policy.
- You can do incremental granular backup.

We are using that since 5.1Mp6.
What’s new with 5.5.3 is that you can get ride of that brick level backup (too long) an just do store backup, that will allow you to to granular restore (only if you backup on disk)

A little correction.

According to the “NetBackup 6.5 for Microsoft Exchange Adminstrator’s Guide” document, “Domain Admins” group is enough to be added and “Enterprise Admins” groups is not needed for “NetBackup Client Service”

So i removed “Enterprise Admins” from the following line:
Create a new account (nbuadmin in our example) on your domain controller and make this a member of the “Domain Admins” and “Enterprise Admins” groups.
